The Witches – Family, Adventure
Category – Movie
Content –When a boy loses his parents in a tragic accident, he goes to live with his Grandma. Depressed and confused, the boy slowly comes out of his shell and begins to interact with the world again. Unfortunately, he “appears” to see a woman with a huge hat and wearing gloves, but then she is gone? Grandma explains that this was a witch, and they will go to a hosh posh hotel and escape any kind of witchery. Little does Grandma know, this exact hotel is where a coven of witches is having their convention. The Grand High Witch has concocted a potion that will turn children into mice, a dream come true for witches everywhere! The boy hears her plan and attempts to stop her, but she is too powerful for him. As he becomes a mouse, now with 2 other “mice children”, they team with Grandma to stop the high witch from turning all children into mice. This was a cute enough story, but I’m really not sure younger children should be watching this? There are scenes that are pretty scary for young children, it seems to have a little more of a horror feel than a children’s adventure movie. This scores a 5 out of 10.
Acting – With Octavia Spencer leading the good side and chatting with mice, and the Grand High Witch being played by Anne Hathaway, you wouldn’t think you could go wrong. But the whole feel of this movie seemed more cheesy than anything else. I adore Stanley Tucci, and even he seemed less than exciting. Sadly, I just couldn’t get into the movie like I should have with these great actors. I just felt like the performances were weak. Is this the actors fault or the writers? I’m not sure… Score is 6 out of 10.
Duration – 1 hr and 46 mins. TOO long to watch these crazy horror type antics for a family film.I saw lots of places where scenes could have been cut or shortened. This gets a 6 out of 10.
TOTAL INDEX for The Witches – 17 out of 30
Recommended Watch – I guess I was just not too impressed with this one. I would leave it and watch something else!
