The Trial of the Chicago 7 – Drama, Comedy
Category – Movie
Content – The Trial of the Chicago 7 has been made before (back in my glory days, I was actually a juror in one such film), but Netflix knows movies and has done a tremendous job detailing the accounts of this infamous trial. While courtroom dramas can tend to become drawn out and boring, this movie has enough comedic moments that it keeps you entertained throughout the film. This movie really dives into the corruption from the judge, a man wrongly accused of anything, and a sympathetic Prosecutor that can see the defendants’ points. All in all, this was just a wonderful film about a historic event that changed many people’s lives forever. And the ending is GREAT! Another great job by Netflix and Director Aaron Sorkin. This scores a 9 out of 10.
Acting – The overall acting in the film is close to perfect. Playing an American, British actor Eddie Redmayne leads the pack as Tom Hayden. His calm and collected scenes in the film show what a talented actor Eddie is. And yes, there is an explosive scene as well to showcase this actor’s many talents. And the comedic relief is Sacha Baron Cohen, who displays his well known comedic side, along with a sophisticated and smart Hippie side. The sympathetic, yet tough Prosecutor Richard Schultz is played by Joseph Gordon-Levitt. Yet another amazing performance by a very talented actor. Lead defending attorney is played by Mark Rylance and doesn’t come up short with his performance or contempts of court. Now, the strong and corrupt judge is played by veteran actor Frank Langella. No surprise here that this actor does a brilliant job playing the angry man with a gavel. And the surprise for me is Yahya Abdul-Mateen, not a name that everyone knows like the other actors, but a name everyone will know soon. He was fantastically brilliant playing the wrongfully accused Bobby Seale (a man that was in Chicago for all of four total hours). There are SO many fantastic and talented actors in this one…Alex Sharp, Jeremy Strong, John Carroll Lynch, Ben Shenkman, JC MacKenzie, Danny Flaherty and Noah Robbins. The entire cast of this film is incredibly strong! Score is 9.5 out of 10.
Duration – 2 hours 10 mins. Yep, Netflix LOVES their long movies and this one is no exception. Although, this movie flows well and is never dull or boring. So while the length is long, the movie is very entertaining and informative. This gets a 8.5 out of 10.

Recommended Watch – This is a MUST watch film, especially for the Oscar Buzz watchers!
OSCAR BUZZ – While it is early in the Oscar season, I believe this movie has a chance at Oscar Love. The historic value alone was great, but the performances were simply brilliant and deserve some recognition. Here is to hoping Eddie Redmayne can get a Supporting Actor Nom and Aaron Sorkin can get the Best Director Nom.
