The Platform

The Platform – Horror
Category – Movie – Exclusively on Netflix

Content – Goreng volunteers to go into The Hole, a vertical prison with numerous levels. Why? He wants to quit smoking. He can bring in one item and he chooses a book to read. And his term in 6 months. Plenty of time to be able to quit smoking right? Too bad the application didn’t give Goreng specifics about The Hole and how everything worked. When he wakes up inside on day one, he is on a level in the forties and he has a cellmate (who likes to use the word “obviously”). Then a platform of food comes down and stops. Goreng is confused, and his cell mate reveals that this platform starts on Level One and continues to the bottom. Each level has 2 minutes to eat. The platform is not too bad on a level in the thirties, possibly even the nineties. But how many levels are there in this place? He is informed by the cellmate “Obviously the lower the level, the less food. Until there is none.” AND, every 30 days, The Hole releases a gas that knocks out every inmate and they are moved to a different level. On day thirty-one, Goreng wakes up on level one hundred seventy something, and is all tied up! He realizes that the only way for his cell mate to survive on such a high level is to make Goreng the food! Since by the time the platform reaches them, there is no food left. and there is actually much more to this story line (a woman on the platform, a child and a dog?). I won’t go into any more details except to say that if you are a horror fan, this is a must see! Its gruesome originality is something to admire. In these days of remakes, this is truly a intelligent and brilliant horror movie! PS This is a foreign film, I watched it dubbed in English. This scores a 9 out of 10.

Acting – Ivan Massague plays Goreng, who does a brilliant job playing the naive smoker that becomes someone who will survive at any cost. But there is more to this film than survival, and Ivan takes us on a platform journey. He is exciting to watch his character come into his own. He has many trials and tribulations to overcome and Ivan does this with ease. Alexandra Masangkay plays the woman on the platform, her unique character is one to watch and again, this actress does the job with ease. Other notable cell mates are Zorion Eguileor, Antonia San Juan and Emilio Buale. All of the acting in this is great! Score is 9 out of 10.

Duration – 94 min. Horror films are excellent when they stay around the ninety minute mark, especially if they are gruesome. It can be hard to take too much blood and guts sometimes. However, since this movie is actually an intelligent horror film, it is no wonder that it’s timing is near perfect. This gets a 9 out of 10.

TOTAL INDEX for The Platform – 27 out of 30

Recommended Watch – One of the BEST original horror movies I’ve seen in a long time. This is a MUST for you Horror Fans; although, due to it’s intelligence I would recommend this one for anyone to watch. Yes, at the end of the day there are some gruesome scenes, but if you can get into the real depth of the story line, I believe watchers will be amazed at the true story being told.

***HUGE applause to Director Galder Gaztelu-Urrutia for a job well done. And to David Desola for an original story!***

  1. Very concise review! 😀 I loved the film as there was true suspense…add to that the callous nature of the people on higher levels, the spitting on food destined for the lower levels…shocking! I loved the heroes altruistic concerns about leaving food so everyone can eat. I will not lie, the ending confused me somewhat but that’s what re-watching is for. 😀
