The Outlaw Josey Wales – Western
Category – Movie (1976)
Content – This movie begins with such a tragedy, farmer Josey Wales witnesses the death of his wife and child within the first five minutes. He joins a group of burly men who run a Confederate guerrilla unit to get revenge on the Union soldiers that murdered his family. And the battles begin. But when the unit surrenders, all except Josey, they are gunned down. Josey rides to help them, but all the men are killed except one boy. Together, they head to the Indian Nation to regroup, knowing that they are now being hunted. The boy passes away, and Josie finds himself traveling with Lone Watie, of the Cherokee Nation. While getting Lone Watie a horse at the trading post, Josie gains a young Indian woman too! Now they are three strong, with a dog, to continue their adventure. While entering a town, he lays eyes on Laura Lee and some of his enemies. He and Lone Watie shoot and then must flee. It isn’t long before they are all back together and back on the run. They come across Comancheros attacking a couple from Kansas, and Josey spots Laura Lee again. But when they take Lone Watie hostage, Josey must follow and get his friend back. Another gunfight and its back on the road, now five strong and a dog. And we get more gunfights. All in all, Josey Wales kills 55 men in this western trek, and tends to spit an awful lot. Side Note – This was also Directed by the man himself, Clint Eastwood. This scores a 9 out of 10.
Acting – When you put together Clint Eastwood and Western, you cannot go wrong. I’m not sure I’ve seen any of this combination that wasn’t magical. I think Clint was born to make these movies. And at some point he married co-star Sondra Locke, so their chemistry was great (once they were married, Sondra only did movies with Clint). Chief Dan George plays Lone Watie. This entire cast was great beyond their years! Score is 10 out of 10.
Duration – 2 hr 15 min. Well, it takes a long time for Josey Wales to kill 55 men. As much of a great film that this one is, it’s still a tad long. This gets a 8.5 out of 10.

Recommended Watch – OH pull this one out of the Archives and see if you can count the 55! And if not, this is still one of the better classic Westerns out there. They just don’t make movies like this anymore!
