The Old Guard

The Old Guard – Action, Fantasy
Category – Movie – Exclusively on Netflix

Content – Another high action film that encompasses a team of four immortal mercenaries, led by Andy, whose intentions are to do good in the world. But when their identities are exposed, they find themselves fighting to stay hidden and safe. At the same time, they discover a fifth immortal and Andy heads out to get her. Nile is a Marine who is killed in action; however makes a full recovery and her teammates all wonder how this could be. Andy gets to her just in time, but this theory of being immortal does not bode well with Nile. While Andy attempts to explain the unexplainable, two of the team are taken by a greedy scientist. Desperate to rescue her friends, Andy and the other two team members (Nile and Booker) travel to London to find their friends before it is too late. But can this be achieved? The one thing we learn is that even the immortal eventually die, and it just might be Andy’s time, as she is the oldest. There is plenty of action and pretty cool stunts in this, along with tender moments of friendship and dirty deceit. I enjoyed the movie, pretty decent original storyline, and thrilled that it has been set up for the sequel! This scores a 8.5 out of 10.

Acting – While I’m not really a big Charlize Theron fan, she definitely delivers as the leader of this group. Her acting and fight scenes are fun to watch, absolutely better than some of the action films these days. And the young and talented Kiki Layne (from If Beale Street Could Talk) plays Nile, and comes out swinging in this action film. The other members of this immortal team are played by Matthias Schoenaerts, Marwen Kenzari and Luca Marinelli. This ensemble does a great job together! And Chiwetel Ejiofor plays a good “bad” guy turned good…All in all, pretty good casting. Score is 8.5 out of 10.

Duration – 2 hrs 5 min. A bit of a long movie for action, there are some content that is a bit more slow, but that’s only because we need some backstory of this team and where they came from (and how long they have actually been alive). I suppose this movie could have been slightly shorter, but it flows well and is really ok. This gets a 8 out of 10.

TOTAL INDEX for The Old Guard – 25 out of 30

Recommended Watch – I would say YES, if you like those fun action movies, especially when this one mixes a bit of fantasy in there too! A good watch, and should have you hoping for that sequel!

OSCAR BUZZ – Netflix has offered up The Old Guard FYC. While I liked this movie and do think that a sequel would be just as fun, I’m not sure about an award winning film? We will see what happens, but I think this film will go down in the books as a fun action movie.
