Spiral – Horror, Thriller
Category – Movie
Content – Following in true SAW fashion, Detective Zeke Banks begins to investigate bizarre murders happening to other cops. Along with his new partner, Detective William Schenk, they uncover clues as to the identity of the killer. But not fast enough, as more police are killed in strange ways. The killer always gives them a choice with the peculiar devices he uses, but alas, they all end up dead. They made the wrong choice. This horror film is a spin off from the SAW franchise and for that does not disappoint. The real question is – Can you watch Chris Rock in a more than serious role and find it convincing? I’m still on the fence here…This scores a 6 out of 10.
Acting – Again, I’m just not sure Chris Rock can pull off the intense police detective that he has been cast in. While I found the character OK, I just thought Chris was trying too hard to not be his normal comedic self. And that reflected in the role being over played. Max Minghella does a great job as the other detective, he is calm and collected. And the surprise casting is Samuel L Jackson playing Zeke’s dad. Another great actor in the film, but I’m not sure it was enough? Score is 6 out of 10.
Duration – 93 mins. Just a hair over an hour and a half, which is what is expected from a horror thriller. Anything more drags out the kills and mystery and just simply doesn’t work. I thought the timing gave us everything we needed. This gets a 8 out of 10.
TOTAL INDEX for Spiral – 20 out of 30
Recommended Watch – You could watch this one or not. You won’t lose any sleep if you don’t take a chance and watch this one. I’m still not convinced the casting is right; therefore, I’m not sure I would watch a sequel (if they do one). Your choice!
