Sound of Metal – Drama
Category – Movie
Content – Ruben has known the drums and hardcore music his entire existence, and performing with his girlfriend Lou is his life. So when he starts to lose his hearing, in his eyes his life is over. And maybe life is over as he knew it, but he quickly learns that being deaf is just another way of life. This movie takes us on the transformation of a musician who cannot perform anymore, and what life becomes after being deaf. It was a great story of one man’s struggles and frustrations, and the means he uses to overcome these. This scores an 7.5 out of 10.
Acting – Riz Ahmed does a fantastic job performing this difficult role. You can tell through his facial expressions the difficulties this predicament would put a person in, and you feel for him. While many actors can “pretend” to be deaf, I think Riz pulled this role out perfectly. And Olivia Cooke does a good job as Lou, the understanding girlfriend that wants nothing more than Ruben to be happy. I have to admit, I loved seeing Lauren Ridloff as the school teacher, since she is actually deaf and does such a great job in all her acting performances! Score is 8 out of 10.
Duration – 2 hrs. A bit long to go through this transformation, at times the movie is pretty slow. While the performances are good to watch, I think the timing could have been shorter. This gets a 7 out of 10.
TOTAL INDEX for Sound of Metal – 22.5 out of 30.
Recommended Watch – A bit slow, but a good watch nonetheless.
OSCAR BUZZ – Riz Ahmed definitely does a great job, and I wouldn’t be surprised if he got a Best Actor Nom; however, I don’t see the Academy showing him the love. Although he does deserve it!
