Content – This is the story of baby Reggie Dwight and how he became Elton John. Elton walks into a rehab center and tells his story through flashbacks. We see his childhood, playing the piano and his torrid relationship with his parents. As he begins to branch out with his music, he meets a songwriter named Bernie Taupin. Together they strike a bond that is stronger than most people could understand. Their first live concert is at the Troubadour in Los Angeles, and that is all she wrote. Everyone in the world knew who Elton John was and how his outrageous costumes and crazy concerts would become him. While this movie is a musical and the dance scenes can be a bit “campy”, there are some very dark moments as well. By the time Elton checks himself into rehab in 1990, he has led a wild and crazy, drug induced life. This movie shows you all of that, with the music. This scores a 9 out of 10.
Acting – Who plays Elton John? That would be Taron Egerton, who actually sings in the film. It is him alone singing “I’m Still Standing”. What a remarkable accomplishment for Taron! He was absolutely brilliant as Elton John! The film also has Jamie Bell, Richard Madden and Bryce Dallas Howard in it. While Bryce plays the wicked mom, she is fantastic in the role! The ensemble cast is definitely fun to watch! Scores a 8 out of 10.
Duration – 2 hrs 1 min. The length of the film is fine, there is a lot to get through regarding Elton’s tragic start to his life. You do have to endure some campy musical numbers, but they are also fun and entertaining. This gets a 8 out of 10.

Recommended Watch – Absolutely! There is much more involved in this film than the songs and dancing, and it is highly intriguing!
