Rent-A-Pal

Rent-A-Pal – Thriller
Category – Movie

Content – Set in the 80’s, David is a middle aged lonely man that lives at home in the basement caring for his elderly mother who has dementia. He attempts to find a soul mate on a dating platform that uses VHS for their interviews. David must go to the store and buy the videos to watch and find someone to connect with. While at the store, he finds a VHS called Rent-A-Pal in the bargain bin, and buys it too. His rent a pal is named Andy, and David becomes obsessed with his new friend. He watches his new BFF over and over again until he has the entire VHS memorized and can complete an entire conversation. However, even though he memorizes the tape, he believes that Andy is real and his words mean more than anyone else! He even cancels a date with his new love interest Lisa, to play Go Fish with his TV. The obsession takes over David’s life, and he begins to live his life through Andy’s words. And the ending is a shocker!!! This movie is an interesting and original concept that warrants a watch. You will not be disappointed in the transformation of this lonely man to an evil, obsessive human being. This scores a 9 out of 10.

Acting – David is played by Brian Landis Folkins, an actor I have not heard of prior to this film, but one I am sure everyone will know soon! His acting was flawless through his transformation. His entire performance screams award contender in this intense film. Anything less would be an injustice to Brian, as his transformation is some of the best acting I have seen all year! And Wil Wheaton plays creepy Andy on a VHS tape. His character is so weird, you aren’t sure if you like him or despise him? Either way, he’s just plain scary! Now, the women in the film are played by Amy Rutledge and Kathleen Brady, who both do a tremendous job dealing with their beloved David. Or is he? Score is 9 out of 10.

Duration – 1 hr 48 min. Almost 2 hours for this one, and a couple times the movie can be slightly slow, as the craziness of David sinks in. But, nothing that would deter your attention whatsoever. And the ending mkaes the length worth while! This gets a 8.5 out of 10.

TOTAL INDEX for Rent-A-Pal – 26.5 out of 30

Recommended Watch – One of the better dramatic, thrilling films I have seen all year! I guess 2020 was saving this one…A must see in my opinion!

OSCAR BUZZ – This movie was SO well done that I am really hoping it gets some awards love. The storyline is so unique and Brian really deserves some love for his outstanding performance. I’m adding it to my OSCAR’s page, with high hopes that this little gem is recognized!
