Content – Captain Kidd, a Civil War veteran, travels the wild west delivering the written word of the news for all to hear. Going from town to town, he comes across a gruesome scene of a man hanging from a tree, and a very confused young girl. He tries to talk the girl, but communication is an issue as she does not seem to know English. He reads her papers and learns that she had been taken by the Indian nation Kiowa as a young child, but was rescued and was being delivered to her aunt and uncle. Desperate to find someone to take this child, he ends up in a town where a lady can communicate with the child. But alas, Captain Kidd cannot find anyone for the job, so he decides to embark on a journey and deliver this child himself. And that begins hundreds of miles on a journey with perils at every corner. The cool bit about this movie is the relationship that develops between Captain Kidd and Johanna. Each teaches the other their language and beliefs. It is definitely a wild ride all the way until the end, where both are trying to find their “home” in the world. This scores a 8.5 out of 10.

Acting – Tom Hanks leads this movie as Captain Kidd, and does a good job as a western veteran. Not as believable as Clint Eastwood in a western, but who is? The actress playing Johanna is Helena Zengel, who I thought would be a break out role for her. But no, this young talented actress has been working for a long time overseas. But here is to hoping that we get to see her cast in many more US films, as she was spectacular. Score is 8.5 out of 10.

Duration – 1 hour 58 mins. There are lots of exciting adventures that happen along this journey. So it is no wonder that it is almost a full two hours. But it never gets slow or drags, so that is encouraging with the lengthy film. This gets a 7.5 out of 10.

TOTAL INDEX for News of the World – 24.5 out of 30

Recommended Watch – A decent western movie for sure for these times, I have seen better and I have seen worse. I didn’t love the movie, but I would suggest everyone give it a go. It is definitely worthy of a watch!

OSCAR BUZZ – Well, did Tom Hanks do enough for that Oscar Nom? I’m not convinced here…But if there is a break out star nomination, I sure hope Helena gets her due justice. She deserves it!
