Memories of Murder – Crime, Drama
Category – Movie – 2003
Content – Subtitled in Korean, this crime drama takes the audience down a long road of rape, murder and suspects. When young women are found raped, bound and murdered, 3 investigators will stop at nothing to find the killer. But 2 local police use torture to get innocent men confess to this crime, even though they did not do it. It isn’t until an out of town cop from Seoul comes in and actually starts pointing out clues, that the real investigation can start. This all takes place between 1986-91, before the complex use of DNA emerged. With little luck, they find a man that fits the description and seems to be a good fit for the killer. They are able to obtain DNA and send the evidence to the USA for comparison. While this last suspect comes up not being a match, you can see the toll this five year investigation is taking on the investigators. While at their breaking point, there seems to be nothing left. So this movie made in 2003 ends with no murderer in custody. UPDATE – the real killer of the Hwaseong murders was caught in 2019. He was subsequently convicted of murdering his sister-in-law. At the time of the killings in 86-91, there was a statute of limitations for first-degree murder of fifteen years. Therefore; although he confessed to killing fourteen girls and DNA proved he did, he can never stand trial for these killings. An amazing story told in 2003, and an ever more amazing ending in 2019! This scores a 9 out of 10.
Acting – Kang-ho Song, Sang-kyung Kim and No-shik Park lead this movie as the three hungry investigators, that will stop at nothing to catch their killer. Alas, that never happens in this film, but the acting is top notch! Score is 8.5 out of 10.
Duration – 2 hrs 11 min. Yes, this one is long and with reading subtitles can get to be a little much. However, the storyline is strong so you push yourself to keep watching. I think the audience will get compelled to see what they go through in this investigation. This gets a 7 out of 10.

***NOTE – In 2003, we barely knew who Bong Joon Ho was, now he is an Oscar winning Director. Interesting what 16 years can do! This movie was the second for his directing career!
