Hooking Up

Hooking Up – Dramedy
Category – Movie

Content – Darla is a sex addict and Bailey is a cancer survivor. But when Darla loses her job as a sex writer, and Bailey discovers he has cancer again (and that his ex-girlfriend really wants to be apart), the situation throws these two into an unlikely road trip. Darla decides that for her sex therapy group she should go on a road trip to all the places she has ever had sex and recreate the moment. And since Bailey has testicle cancer, he figures this would be his last Hoorah to help Darla on her quest. This duo sets off on a wild adventure; however, they soon discover that maybe there is more to life? There is a lot of simulated sexual acts in this film (Darla is a sex addict), but there is no nudity or gratuitous scenes. Its all in the name of therapy. About three quarters of the way through this comedic movie, the duo begins to learn more about themselves and each other and it turns to becoming serious. After a huge, very public blow up between the two, they go their separate ways. Darla realizes she really does have a problem, and Bailey has come to grips with his cancer. The movie does end on a high note, and is actually very satisfying. This scores a 7 out of 10.

Acting – Brittany Snow plays Darla, the sex addict that doesn’t believe she is one. The role is completely meant to be funny, but when it turns serious, Brittany does a good job in making us feel her pain and confusion. And Sam Richardson plays Bailey, who does a great job playing dazed and confused about this entire situation that he finds himself abruptly in. Since these two are on a road trip, the movie really focuses on them. Score is 8 out of 10.

Duration – 1 hr 44 min. The movie goes through as a comedy, but when the drama kicks in, there is a bit of a lag. The movie turns a bit too serious and it loses the momentum and comedic timing. So it is a bit long for me because of the sudden switch. This gets a 6 out of 10.

TOTAL INDEX for Hooking Up – 21 out of 30.

Recommended Watch – Again, there is a bit of simulated sex in this film, so you should be aware of that going in. If you are OK with that, then you should give this movie a go. It’s worth a try!
