Harriet – Drama
Category – Movie
Content – What do we really know about the Underground Railroad? After watching this movie, you will know how Minty breaks from slavery in the south and becomes known as the great Harriet Tubman. Not only does she return to her master’s house to get her family (more than once), she saves countless slaves and brings them 100 miles away to Philadelphia. She lives by the saying – “Be free or die.” Her slave owner Gideon vows to bring her back, but to no avail. Harriet becomes too strong in the Underground Railroad for anyone to touch. She would later take people all the way to Canada for freedom and even led her own brigade in the Civil War. Amazingly, she dies at the age of 91 surrounded by family. Another true story told very well. This scores a 7 out of 10.
Acting – Harriet Tubman is played by Cynthia Erivo, who absolutely shines in this film. Her range of emotion is superb and she is a pleasure to watch. The role of Gideon is played by Joe Alwyn. While Joe has been a supporting actor in several Oscar nominated films, I think this role was too big for his britches at this time. I believe Joe will grow into a great actor, but not here. He was not ready for this big and does not do it justice. However; the sophisticated Janelle Monae is lovely as ever, and Leslie Odom Jr is great. Scores a 7 out of 10.
Duration – 2 hrs 5 mins. It takes time for Harriet to free 100’s of slaves! You just have to go with the length of this film. This gets a 7 out of 10.
TOTAL INDEX for Harriet – 21 out of 30.
Recommended Watch – Yes, the true story of Harriett Tubman is historical and it will teach you her story. Good for 1 watch.
