Das Boot

Das Boot – Drama, Adventure
Category – Movie (1981)

Content – This movie is about a WWII German U-boat. With that being said, it is best to watch in German with English subtitles. The feel of the film is more genuine. And I watched the Director’s Cut, so I got the full film experience. So, the German’s are sent out in their U-boat to destroy their enemies. And if you were claustrophobic, this might not be the best job for you. So many scenes are shot with men running through the one lane passage of this U-boat. There is extreme drama and tension when they are submerged under water with enemy boats atop. And when the enemy destroyers drop their charges, it becomes sheer panic, wondering if this submarine is going to sink. IF it sinks, all the men on board would drown. Interesting fact that I did not know, a U-boat cannot fire their torpedos unless they are on top of the water at another boat. Which means, to engage in enemy fire, they must be on top of the water and visible. Tensions run high inside this skinny boat – the Captain wants to engage in battle, while the men wonder if they will die with every engagement and after time, want to go home. But they are given a last minute task that proves to be nearly impossible. And the end is one that I did not see coming!!! This scores a 8.5 out of 10.

Acting – Jurgen Prochnow (who I know from the bad guy in Beverly Hills Cop 2) plays the Captain. His leadership role is one with pure intensity and drama, as he must lead the entire crew. As this movie is foreign, all the actors are as well. Bernd Tauber, Erwin Leder and Herbert Gronemeyer are the biggest supporting to the Captain. All the cast must show a wide range of emotions – very dramatic scenes, intense fear, joyous times and amazing adventure. All inside a skinny U-boat – They all deserve a round of applause for succeeding this task. Score is 9.5 out of 10.

Duration – Director’s Cut – 3 hrs 29 min. Yes, this is very long, I admit it took me two days to complete this one. If you split this up between two days, it is easier to get through. But it’s long nonetheless! This gets a 7 out of 10.

TOTAL INDEX for Das Boot – 25 out of 30

Recommended Watch – For sure, my recommendation is to watch this in German with the English subtitles. Take two days, it’s an extremely good watch! It is no surprise this film was Nominated for 6 Academy Awards.
