Coven – Thriller, Fantasy
Category – Movie
Content – Reminiscent of the 1996 “The Craft”, another witch movie with young girls (these ones are in college though). The girls need five witches to become a Coven, but while invoking the ritual to bring back Ashura, the leader Ronnie gets carried away and actually kills one of the girls. Now, this band of four witches needs a fifth. A spell brings them to Sophie, a loner at the college, but definitely a witch. However, invoking Ashura might not be the correct choice for the rest of the girls. While Ashura has now risen, she brings death and destruction to the rest of the witches. There might be a way to stop her, but can Sophie figure out how in time? Unlike “The Craft”, this movie is a bit more campy in many ways and more racy in others. This scores a 5 out of 10.
Acting – The witches are played by Lizze Gordon, Margot Major, Miranda O’Hare, Jocelyn Saenz and Jennifer Cipolla. While the acting is fine, it seems that Jennifer Cipolla, who plays the leader Ronnie, is trying to invoke Fairuza Balk from “The Craft.” It is just too much acting, like she is trying too hard to be good. I’n not sure if this is her fault or the director though? Either way, it can be hard to digest. Score is 5 out of 10.
Duration – A very quick 81 minutes. The movie has enough interesting content to keep it flowing. Anything longer would have been too much. This gets a 7 out of 10.
TOTAL INDEX for Coven – 17 out of 30
Recommended Watch – If you like “The Craft,” this one fails in comparison and might not be a good fit. However, if you are looking for girls in skimpy clothes running around being witches, Give it a go!
