Black Beauty – Family, Drama
Category – Movie
Content – OH the beautiful story of the wild mustang mare, Black Beauty. In true Disney fashion, we follow the life of Black Beauty, from childbirth to the final days. Along this life there are many trials and tribulations, all voiced by Beauty herself from Kate Winslet. When thrust from her family running on the wild plains, the only person Beauty can relate to is Jo. A teenager who is also thrust from her family due to a tragic accident and made to live on a horse rescue ranch with her uncle, John. Beauty “partners” with Jo and becomes tame and rideable. But, tragedy strikes and eventually Beauty and Jo are separated. While this breaks both the horse and rider’s hearts, Jo vows to once again find Beauty. After years of searching, and Beauty going from home to home, it all comes together in the end. This is a GREAT horse lovers feel good movie, one of those types that people could use in their lives right now. This scores an 8.5 out of 10.
Acting – When I first saw Mackenzie Foy, she was playing Bella and Edward’s daughter in Twilight. She was cute as a button, and she has grown into a lovely young lady. Her acting in this movie was solid and professional, making me wonder how she will continue to develop as an actress. I’m seeing good things in Mackenzie’s future! I’m a huge Game of Thrones fan, so seeing anyone from that TV Show is always a delight, and Iain Glen was superb in this film. As Uncle John, he played the horse rescuer and tamer well, he was very believable as a horse trainer. I think I would watch Iain in just about anything! And although we did not see her, Kate Winslet does a great voice over as Beauty. She definitely caught the horse’s emotions with her soft words. Another couple of notable mentions here are Claire Forlani (no surprise) and Calam Lynch. All in all, a pleasurable cast to watch in this horse film. Score is 8.5 out of 10.
Duration – 1 hr 50 mins. Beauty must go through a lifetime, and the length of this film is spot on with the journey. You really get a feel for the horse and the distress she goes through throughout the film. Anything shorter would have been an injustice. This gets a 9 out of 10.
