Ammonite – Drama
Category – Movie
Content – Set in 1840’s England, this movie focuses on fossil hunter Mary Anning and her new found friend, Charlotte Murchison. While Mary is a loner, she is unwillingly forced to attend to Charlotte while her husband goes overseas. And what develops is an unlikely friendship, and an even deeper love between the two women. It’s a love that cannot be denied, but what will happen when Charlotte’s husband comes to take her away? Will Mary and Charlotte survive without each other? The story tells a deep love between two women, one that cannot be denied by either. While this is a beautiful love story, it wasn’t my cup o’ tea. I found it very slow and at times extremely erotic. Maybe the love was a little too deep for me. A beautiful story though! This scores an 5 out of 10.
Acting – The film is based on these two women, played by Kate Winslet and Saoirse Ronan. While I am a huge fan of both, I could see the love between the two women through their acting. Both did a remarkable convincing job; although, I’m not surprised due to the caliber of acting that you always get out of these two remarkable actresses. Score is 9 out of 10.
Duration – 1 hr 57 mins. I’ve already said I thought the movie was a tad slow, so the length only strengthens to idea that it could have been cut down. Maybe even by ½ hour would have made the film better for me? This gets a 6 out of 10.
TOTAL INDEX for Ammonite – 20 out of 30
Recommended Watch – This is a slow watch and not one for everyone, that is for sure. If you have that “manly” man in your life, this is not for him!
OSCAR BUZZ – I can see where you could give Kate or Saoirse the Best Actress Nom for their roles. The film is not my favorite, but either would be worthy of a nomination for their work.
